Do UTM Technicians Need Certification? Yes, They Do!
There is a common misunderstanding in the industry that Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) technicians only need basic training from an equipment supplier on how to operate a UTM gauge. However, proper personnel certification is required to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
According to ASNT SNT-TC-1A, UTM technicians should hold a UTM Level 2 Limited certification with a minimum of 8 hours of training focused on digital thickness measurement (numeric output). Unlike conventional Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Level 2 certification, which requires 80 hours of classroom training, UTM technicians do not need to complete this extensive course to perform their job correctly.
